Billy Elliot secures nine nods from London critics

Stephen Daldry's Billy Elliot racked up nine award nominations from the London Film Critics' Circle, which holds its awards ceremony on February 15 at London's Savoy Hotel.

The UK hit picked up nominations including British film and British director of the year. It also received three separate nominations in the British newcomer of the year category for writer Lee Hall, director Daldry and its young star, Jamie Bell.

Hall is also nominated for British screenwriter of the year, while the film's Julie Walters and Gary Lewis are nominated for British actor and actress respectively. Billy Elliot's producers - Greg Brenman from Tiger Aspect and Jonathan Finn from Working Title offshoot WT2 - receive a nod in the British producer of the year category.

Other nominees in the producer category include Olivia Stewart for The House Of Mirth; Simon Channing-Williams for Topsy-Turvy; Norma Heyman for Gangster No 1; and Peter Lord, Nick Park and David Sproxton for Chicken Run.

Topsy-Turvy was heavily nominated, landing nods in eight categories including British screenwriter of the year and British director of the year for Mike Leigh.

Also nominated in the British director category are Ridley Scott for Gladiator, Christopher Nolan for Memento and Terence Davies for The House Of Mirth.

Nominations for director of the year go to Spike Jonze for Being John Malkovich; Mary Harron for American Psycho; Phillip Kaufman for Quills; Ang Lee for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; and Steven Soderbergh for Erin Brockovich.

Nominations for foreign-language film of the year include Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Wong Kar-wai's In The Mood For Love; Dominik Moll's Harry, He's Here To Help; Claire Denis' Beau Travail; and Majid Majidi's The Colour Of Paradise.

Film of the year nominations go to O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Being John Malkovich, Memento, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Gladiator.
