The House of Mirth, Terence Davies I love Davies's earlier, lyrical non-narratives, Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Long Day Closes, but The House of Mirth is more accessible while retaining the visual rigor or his earlier work. A brilliant, restrained adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel, it avoids the deadly chi-chi that often kills period costume drama, such as Martin Scorsese's Wharton folly, The Age of Innocence. It has a stirring central performance by Gillian Anderson, and Davies refuses to let the foolishness of the characters remain unpunished. Amazing work. (Sony Pictures Classics) 19. The Mission, Johnny To 20. Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Jim Jarmusch
