Gillian Anderson has finally gained the centre of the World Cinematic stage for which she was always destined. She is stunning as Lily a turn of the Century Idealist who is finding it hard to find a suitable male match. It is difficult to write about this films without either giving the main impact away or else making it sound like just another romantic Period Piece. It is not this at all and weaves a very subtle web of emotional interplay between the main characters. The film always seems to have one more layer beyond which you cannot see and Gillian Anderson and Eric Stoltz seem to leave the screen at moments which are almost musical in their intensity. It's a beautiful match and I hope we may see them both together again some time to test even further the limits they can both push each other to. (22/10/00)
